Workshop-PLUS Sharing Serious News Friday, July 27, 2018 Chicago, Illinois
Sharing serious news with patients and families is stressful for everyone involved. Clinicians who practice effective communication skills that attend to the emotional impacts of serious news discover a heightened sense of competence and confidence.
Done well, sharing serious news can preserve and strengthen the clinician-patient relationship, foster collaboration, and promote healing and coping with illness, injury or death. Done poorly, it can cause unnecessary suffering and stress for all involved. So, while we cannot change the actual news itself, we do have control over the manner in which it is shared.
IHC’s evidence-based communication skills programs give clinicians at every stage of their careers unique opportunities to reflect upon and practice patient communication techniques that are more efficient, effective and patient-centered. The communication model for sharing serious news is the SPIKES model:
S = Setting
P = Perception
I = Invitation
K = Knowledge
E = Emotions
S = Strategy and summary
This full-day interactive workshop brings together IHC’s skills development workshop in the morning, with an afternoon of contextually relevant skills practice. Trained actors portraying patients use improvisational skills to tailor practice settings to each learner’s interests and goals. Learners benefit from structured and productive feedback, to enhance what they do well.
Tuition Fee: $925.00
Includes workshop, trained simulated patients, lunch, and all curriculum materials.
